Article for December 24th, 2006 What Have You Not Been Noticing? By Vincent Harris
|
If you want to see someone look perplexed, walk up to someone
looking out a window and ask, " What are you Not looking at?" In
fact, think about the last time you were looking out a window...isn't it
true that there was something that captured your attention,
something that you focused on?
Something always has our attention, the question we should be
asking is, " What do I have my attention on right now?" Why?
Anytime our attention is on anything, the number of things it's not
on are virtually unlimited!
Where might this be useful? Have you ever worried excessively
about something? Worry requires focused attention on something
we fear. Did you realize though, that at that very moment, that you
were choosing to ignore massive amounts of information that were
available for being thought about?
Learn to ask yourself, " What Am I Not Thinking About Right Now?"
As soon as you ask that question, you immediately bring into your
awareness.....other things to notice and think about! Worry, guilt,
embarrassment, most fear, and other usually un-resourcesful
emotions too numerous to count, require that we place, and then
keep our awareness....our attention on them.
A good place to start when learning to shift your attention is your
body. Until I mention it now, it's very unlikely that you were noticing
the temperature and feelings that exist between your toes......or the
sensations in your ear lobes.....or your gums below your lower back
teeth ( molars). But if you are reading this...and have a pulse....you
are to some degree noticing them now.
Those sensations were there the whole time...and always are, they
just usually fall into that category of things called...."what I'm not
thinking about."
Anytime you find yourself feeling less than excited, and in need of a
boost, simply take a few moments and think of at least ten things
you were not thinking about. As your awareness expands into the
vastness of possibilities, you'll find that what you had previously
been thinking about becomes smaller and smaller by contrast.
Since it's Christmas Eve here in the states, and most of us have
busy days planned ( Myself included) I'll keep this weeks newsletter
short. I hope you have a wonderful time this season and celebrate
in a way that's meaningful to you and your family. I'll look forward to
seeing you next week in a much longer version of After Hours with
Vincent Harris!
